Happy December! It's hard to believe that the holiday season is here already. This week, we kicked off our Random Acts of Kindness program. The blog posts have started to come in from members of our community who have received an act of kindness from someone in our room. The class is learning that making someone else feel good makes them feel good in return. Today our class did two random acts of kindness right within the walls of our school. First, we delivered a basket of candy canes to Mrs. Schreck's 5th grade class. They were so surprised and plan to pay it forward. Next, we surprised Mr. Garab by decorating the door to his office! He was very surprised! I can't wait to read about the kind things that the class will be doing on the blog. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to meet with me to discuss your child's progress on our two conference days. Please remember that if you have any questions or concerns I'm always available. Please reach out! There were many questions about the online homework last Tuesday. Some of the words that were given online were not on the original list. This week you will see that students have "challenge words" as part of their weekly lists. Students will not be tested on these words but they may come up when doing online homework every Tuesday. Thank you for your patience with "Techy Tuesdays". We had a lot of fun in social studies this week. We continued our study of Native Americans. We learned about the Iroquois Confederacy and even acted it out during class. Each clan was given a problem that they had to work together to solve for their tribe. Different roles within the clan were assigned and we sat "fireside" and came up with solutions to these problems. We also made a replica of Hiawatha's belt out of pasta. Next week we will continue with our Native American unit and will be learning about the False Face Society and we have a very exciting craft for the kids to create while we read our next chapter book, Eagle Song! Mark your calendars, students will be given a test on this topic on Friday, December 16th. In math we are working on division. Please encourage your child to practice their math facts each night. There are many fun websites available. In ELA we worked on personal narrative writing pieces. I really enjoyed reading about what everyone did over Thanksgiving break. We also took our first unit test. Grades will be posted sometime next week. I hope you have a wonderful weekend! - Mrs. Kusche

What a great week we've had in room 22 ! Thank you to all of the parents who took the time out of their busy schedules to meet with me. I look forward to meeting with the rest of you after Thanksgiving break.
Thank you for your patience with our new classroom website. The site is brand-new and very much under construction. I felt a sense of urgency in creating this site in planning for our upcoming "Random Acts of Kindness" project that will kick off after Thanksgiving. For a sneak peak, click here. This week we began our very exciting unit about native americans. Our focus this week was on the two main tribes that lived in New York State: Iroquois and Algonkians. The students enjoyed learning about their way of life, heritage, dwellings, and roles of people in the tribe. The children are very excited to work on their collaborative longhouse projects on Monday, November 21st. Thank you to all of our parent volunteers! This week we had our first 100% Homework Club celebration. 15 students turned in 100% of their homework for the first marking period. I am so proud! We celebrated with an ice cream party during lunch on Tuesday. In math the class took a quiz on two digit by two digit multiplication. Quiz grades have been posted to PowerSchool. Don't forget to have your child work on their math facts each night. These skills are embedded is everything we do this year! This week in writing we focused on our RACER responses. This acronym is used in formulating short and long responses to literature we read in class. The class has done a really nice job with this. We also started our third ELA skills rotation. During this rotation, students will be working on cause and effect. Next week is a short week. No spelling list will be assigned. I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving with your family. Feel free to leave questions or comments below in the comment feed! - Mrs. Kusche Dear Parents,
It has been an exciting week here at Green Meadow. With Election Day and our Veteran’s Day assembly we were quite busy. In writing we worked on making holiday cards for soldiers who will be away from their families for the holiday season. The class put a lot of thought into what they wanted to say. We did an activity where I had the students visualize what it may be like for that soldier to read their words while they are away from home. Election Day results at Green Meadow were quite different from the results of our nation’s election. Hillary Clinton won 54% of the popular vote while Donald Trump won 42%. The other 4% of votes went to candidates Jill Stein and Gary Johnson. The students enjoyed learning about this historical election and the voting process. Next week we will begin our study of Native Americans. We will be looking for parent volunteers to come in and help us build longhouses on the morning on Monday, November 21st from 9:30 – 11:30. More information will be sent home next week on this exciting collaborative project. Don’t forget that Thursday, November 17th is a half day of school. Teachers will be holding parent conferences that afternoon and evening. Have a great weekend!
Dear Parents,
Happy November! We survived the week of celebrating Halloween on a Monday. Thank you to all of the parents who helped to make our Halloween breakfast a success. The class really enjoyed it. This week in ELA we read multiple passages related to the First Lady of the United States. The kids did a wonderful job comparing and contrasting these passages. Also, as part of our center work, students were given presidential candidate profiles and were asked to compare and contrast Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. We also had some more election fun while incorporating grammar through the use of presidential MadLibs. We are gearing up for Election Day next Tuesday. Green Meadow will be having a school wide election to see which candidate would win if kids could vote! Our Veteran’s Day assembly will be held on Thursday (11/10) at 10 am. Remember that there is no school on Friday (11/11) Please take note that our spelling test will be given on Thursday of next week. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Don’t forget to change those clocks back on Sunday!
Dear Parents,
Attached to our newsletter this week is a sign up for remind. Remind is a communication tool that helps teachers connect instantly with parents by sending quick, simple messages to any device. I plan to use this for last minute reminders and updates about our classroom. Please follow the instructions on the attached paper and sign up today! This will not take the place of our weekly newsletters. This week was all about fire prevention. We had fire fighters from Schodack Valley and East Greenbush. The children watched a short video and had an opportunity to ask questions. Unfortunately, due to the rain, students were unable to go outside and check out the fire trucks. To go along with this topic, this week in ELA we talked about how to prepare for emergencies in small group. We discussed fire escape plans and what to do in case of an emergency. Next week we will continue to discuss government and our upcoming election. Congratulations to our student council representatives that were elected: Haley A. and Mason will do a wonderful job I’m sure! Have a great weekend!
